Fall Splendor at Schuh Farm

Few things are more fun to sketch than bright Fall pumpkins and Schuh Farm sure delivered the goods today!  It may have been overcast, but the yellows and oranges of the pumpkins and gourds brightened up every sketch.    

Sketching by the West Lot - Not as Easy as it Sounds

This week's sketching meet-up began well before our Monday at 1:00 convening at - what proved to be the enigmatic - "West Lot".

Texts flew, phone calls ensued, all with the single question: 

"Where the heck is "the West Lot"?  

Followed by the compass-based answer that proved to be of absolutely no use: 

"Oh you know, it's West of the buildings that are West of The Cabana."

"You mean by the umbrellas?"

"What umbrellas?  No, I don't see any umbrellas. You know, it's the lot by the marina South of Cap Sante."

"Where they launch the boats?" 

"No, no. Way West of there - down just East of the W.T. Preston by the Mermen placard."

"Excuse me?"

"Close to the life-sized driftwood giraffes."

"Ok, now I know where you're talking about."

"Seriously?" 

"See you at 1:00." 

Suffice to say, we found each other and, while it was a bit breezy, we had a ball sketching there. So here you go... our pics from sketching at the ubiquitous West Lot:

An Almost Secret Garden Captivated Us Today

Several sketchers in our group love to garden and sketching in Carolyn's (almost) secret garden tucked in on a hillside is a true feast for the senses that we always enjoy.  Today her luscious roses were particular favorites as we head into Fall.

Sketching Big Views on Bisquet Ridge Lane

Tucked under the shade of our rear car doors, we lined up to sketch some of the most panoramic views around - fields, mountains, islands and sea beyond the Samish Flats.

Sketching at the Shipyard

The former Lovric Sea-Craft marina (now Stabbert Marine & Industrial) is always one of our most fascinating spots to sketch.  In 1965, the sandy beach along the shore became Lovric's marina and the property even  contains some buildings built more than 100 years ago before their marina.  Tucked up against the shore, it's flanked by a large wooden ship breakwater called La Merced visible in some of the photos and sketches below.

Starting in the early 1960s, the Lovric family lived at the house at the top of the hill overlooking the shore as the family transformed it into the marina it became - part industrial and part recreational - with a space for work on boats and docks where tenants can keep their boats tied up. 

After almost 60 years in business the marina and boatyard was sold to Stabbert Marine & Industrial whose other shipyard is in Seattle.
